Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

Obligatory First Post

The blessing of a blog is that it is linear (chronological) and it captures thoughts, events, whatever…over time.  The curse of a blog is that it is linear.  Kind of like the Superbowl one is likely to only remember the first one (Go Pack!) and the most recent one.  Is there anything more special about this post than any other?  I doubt it.  In fact, I seem to be making a concerted effort to say nothing of any import.  Once this is out of the way I can get down to business.

Let me start by briefly listing my biases.  What is objectivity anyway?  There is NO ONE that reports or comments on events that isn’t bringing their own baggage.  I am as guilty as the next person.  Unlike the media, I don’t claim objectivity.  I am Roman Catholic and politically conservative with strong libertarian leanings.  I trust these personal issues will be evident as soon as I start posting for real.

Three Things I Would Implement Tomorrow to Make America a Better Place (in no particular order)…

Allow school choice (btw – this is in NO WAY impacted by the first amendment which says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”  Letting a family use state funds to choose the best education for their child is nothing like the United States Congress making a law establishing a national religion.

Abolish the Federal Reserve!  Our government finances its overspending in three ways:
1)   tax receipts
2)   borrowing against future tax receipts
3)   allowing the Fed to print money, thus devaluing the dollar
Abolishing the Fed and establishing a commodity based currency eliminates problem #3.

Set up the FairTax (bye bye IRS).  This addresses problem #1.  We stop taxing productivity and make the real current cost of government painfully transparent.  I know the FairTax is designed for revenue neutrality.  However, which politician will be the first to figure out that lowering the rate would be a great re-election strategy.

Alright.  That should be a good start.  I’ll see what hits my radar in the next day or two and get down to blogging in earnest.  Thanks for checking in.
